I definitely feel everyone should see this movie because it’s an absolute gem and there’s nothing like it, but parents need to decide when their children are ready to see it. slight physical abuse (nothing terrible). a reference to breasts and some kissing. there are a couple swears and curses, but nothing extreme. also contains large eels that attack the characters. the Fire Swamp contains quicksand and fire as well as the ROUSes. They are really big and if your kid is young enough to be afraid something is under their bed or in their closet, I don’t recommend this for them until they’re older. the Fire Swamp has ROUSes, Rodents Of Unusual Size. some blood during sword fights and in the Fire Swamp. two torture scenes no blood, but those scenes are pretty intense.these scenes are hard for me to watch as an adult, so I definitely feel this is the most important part for parents to be aware of. I’m writing this review to warn that this movie may not be suitable for kids who are really sensitive. However, I was an extremely sensitive child and that has carried on into my adult life. Absolutely phenomenal, and I grew up watching it with my dad quoting it all the time. I just thought caregivers should be aware of this content, as it's not noted in the summary. If this is a challenge your family faces, it could be a trigger and counter-productive to the conversation you are having, or alternatively it could be a conversation starter. Instead, the support person in the movie fixes the situation the character feels doomed by. This isn't addressed in a way that psychologists today recommend: normalizing the feelings but addressing the concerns and helping the individual have hope for the future. A character deems that suicide is their only way out of a tough situation. However, I didn't remember that there is an attempted suicide. For the most part, this is presented in a light hearted way and provides a great segway to talk about these things. It provides some excellent conversation starters, from gender roles to vengeance and grudges, smarts vs wisdom, the value of diversity, substance abuse, abuse of power, and corruption. This is a classic movie I looked forward to sharing with my kids once they were old enough to understand what concepts this movie mocks (especially medieval Europe), and that all of it is intentionally over-the-top (rodents of unusual size, for instance). Trigger warning: this movie includes a brief but quickly diverted attempted suicide, which is referenced three times.
